So you know how everyone says, “New year, new me” in January? Well, this series is along those lines. In December I decided to take part in the Reddit Secret Santa and Holiday Card Exchange, it was so much fun! Well, if you are unfamiliar with this it is a gift exchange through a website called reddit.com. If you have never looked into, I suggest you do. Anyway, to take part in this Secret Santa you need to fill out a questionnaire and about things you enjoy, organizations you like, and a question that asked about my hobbies.
This question took me such a long time because the only thing I could come up with is reading. I am not saying that reading is not a good hobby, I was just surprised I could not even come up with a second one. I ended up asking my boyfriend and my best friend for help. They too could not name anything other than reading. I’m not sure exactly why, but this really hit me.
I think it really bothered me because I realized I did not have time to try new things. I think it bothered me because I thought I was defined by more than just reading. I think it bothered me because I seemed so one dimensional. Now I want to be clear, there is nothing wrong with just having reading as a hobby, reading is a great hobby! I just realized I want to have more. I want to spend my time doing multiple things I love doing. I want to grow.
So, if you could not tell by the name this series is going to be about me trying a new hobby every month. I think it will be a lot of fun taking a month to learn something new and maybe even learn more about myself.
I know this is not book related, but I hope you will all join me on this little adventure. And, who knows maybe I can do some of these new hobbies while I listen to a good ol’ audiobook.
Oh I feel you so hard on this! Reading and I actually took a break for a while because I needed to find out who I was without it, for a lot of the same reasons you talked about. So with that said, here are some hobbies I found while on a hiatus with reading: Making Soap, Knitting/Arm Knitting/Finger Knitting/Crocheting, Hockey Games, my blog..I’ve also binge watched quite a few shows in between finding a hobby I liked and ones I didn’t. Excited to see how this project goes!!

Thank-you so much for the ideas, I have jotted them all down. I am glad I am not the only one who has felt like this, I was kinda expecting I might be the only one feeling this way. Thanks for reading!

I think because readers are inherently devoted to books, we forget there are other things in the world that might give us joy as well ❤️

Ooh this sounds like a fun plan! Do you like being creative? Because then you could try knitting, art, photography and so on.

I love being creative, I went to art school for two years, but I ended up changing my path. I think that might be why it is bugging me so much. Thanks for the suggestions Lia!

Great decision. Finding new hobbies not only makes you more rounded (sometimes literally in the case of baking LOL), but they also often create new friendships with people who are interested in the same things.
I love to read (in addition to being a book blogger I belong to a real-life book club which meets once a month), crochet, bake, do word puzzles (I belong to a Scrabble club which meets once a week), and in the summer…. gardening.

I wish there were more “clubs” around me. I would so join in a heart beat. Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh, I love this! I actually had to think for myself a bit when it comes to hobbies but.. I count reading and blogging as separate hobbies. I also love baking, although I haven’t been doing much of it lately. I recently got some ramekins though, so I’m definitely going to try out some recipes for those in the near future!
Not really a hobby but my boyfriend and I have set ourselves the goal of watching 75 of our own dvd’s this year which is pretty fun as well. Oh, and we sometimes puzzle! We bought a giant one in December that we have yet to start but it’s a fun thing to do together.
When it comes to my boyfriend, I guess his aquarium is pretty much his hobby, haha. Whenever he has time, he’s busy cleaning the thing or sometimes even watching it as if it’s a television?
Random things popping up in my mind. Don’t know if they’ll be of any use to you but who knows!
Ooh! Something a friend of mine loves doing: Geocaching! If you like taking walks and discovering new places, you should totally look into that!

This post is a bit older, but I only now found it and think that it’s such a great idea! All my hobbies seem to revolve around books (reading, blogging, writing), so trying out something different is somerhing I would love to do as well 🙂
