Reading Goals | 2018 Recap

Reading Goals NEW

I cannot believe this year is coming to a close soon and it is time to reflect on the goals I set for myself back in December 2017. It feels like so long ago, but at the same time this year felt like it flew by. A few times this year I checked in with my goals, but I have not done so since the first half a the year. I honestly kinda lost track of my goals because one large one I realized was not going to happen. I will get more into that later in this post.

  1. Update my blog post headers
    • I loved designing so I want to introduce a few new headers and give myself that time to be creative.
  2. Read 50 books
    • Every year I set my reading goal at 50. It is an average of a book in little over a week and I tend to not stress out about it.
  3. Read 30,000 pages
    • I though this page goal would be fun.
  4. Try new things
    • This year I want to experiment a little outside of what I normally post, spice things up a little bit.
  5. Complete the 2018 POPSUGAR reading challenge

My Reflection

  1. I did this as soon as the year started and I am very happy with the graphics I created. I also like the fact that I made them in a way where I can change the background images if I ever feel like it and it would not be too much work.
  2. I am happy to say that I read more than 50 books this year, in fact I read 105 as of 12/9.
  3. Once again I can say that I read more than 30,000 page throughout the year. I ended up reading a grand total of 36,985 pages as of 12/9.
  4. This year I felt like I tried some new things on my blog such as posting about My life, DIYs, and Cooking as well as doing a few fun series such as _____ Picks my books, Annotating my Bookshelf , and introducing discussion posts. All of which I had a ton of fun doing. I know in the new year I want to do another round of Annotating my Bookshelf.
  5. This one is where the problem came in. While I love the idea of the pop sugar challenge, it really is not a good challenge for me. There are a 52 prompts and while I did do a majority of them. I am a book reader and I honestly have no interest in reading nordic noir currently. While my goal was to read 50 books, why would I pick a challenge that would assign me 52 books. On top of that a majority of the books on this challenge I did not own and this year I really wanted to read some of the books I had on my shelf the longest. Which I did and now the longest a book has been on myself has been 19 months, less than two years. So I was happy to give up on this goal because it did not line up with my other goals, which were a priority to me.

Overall, I am very happy with how I did with my 2018 Reading and Blog goals. I achieve the ones that were the most important to me and I am proud of myself for putting aside one that really did not benefit me in reaching my other goals. Goals should be realistic and reachable. While I come up with my 2019 goals, this is going to be in my mind.

Reading Goals | 2018 | 2nd Quarter Review

Reading Goals

Well, in my last quarterly update, Reading Goals | 2018 | 1st Quarter Review,  I was already able to check a few of my goals off of my list, but a few I still needed to work on. I just wanted to do a quick little check in to share my progress as well as keep myself accountable. Here is how I am doing on my 2018 goals for my reading and my blog.

Update my blog post headers – Check!

Read 50 books- Check! As of right now I have read 54 books, I am so excited!

Read 30,000 pages

As of right now I have read a total of 18,412 pages, so I am more than halfway to my goal of reading 30,000 pages. This makes me very happy since I was a bit worried the last check in.

Try new things

As I stated in my 1st quarter update I have started a few new series on my blog, these include Operation Find a Hobby,  ________ Picks my Books, and Discussion posts. I always shied from discussion posts due to fear of many people not being interested, but I am so glad I started to incorporate them into my blog.  They are a ton of fun. Below I have linked the series for you if you are interested in reading.

Reading Goals

Since the third month of the year is coming to a close, that means it is time to check in with my yearly goals for my reading and my blog. I cannot believe that we are already a quarter of the way through 2018. I feel like this year is just flying by. Anyway, without further delay here are the updates on my 2018 goals!

Update my blog post headers

I am happy to say that I have redesigned all of my banners and post headers. I love how them came out. This is one is a check!

Read 50 books

Currently I am ahead of schedule on this goal by 7 books. Woohoo!

.

Read 30,000 pages

I am currently at 6519 pages. So that means if I continue on this path I will have 26,076 pages by the end of the year. So while I am making great progress I need to up my reading a bit, but I will admit this does not include books I am currently in the middle of so I might actually be on track. I guess we shall see.

Try new things

I think I am doing good with this one as well. I have started a few new series on my blog. The first being Operation Find a Hobby where I try a bunch of different hobbies to see if I like them or not. I also started a series where I have others pick out the books I add to my TBR.  If you wanted to see what I have tried so far or added to my TBR I shall link them below.

I would say that so far I am doing pretty good with this goal. I have 16 down and only 24 more to go according to my spreadsheet.

Reading Goals

A new year and a few new goals for my blog, my reading, and myself. I don’t know about you, but I love setting goals for myself. I find it motivating and I am always excited to see if I hit them at the end of the year. For now I am going to share the goals I have for my blog and reading in the new year.

Reading Goals | Mid-Year Check-In

Reading Challenge

In March I did a quarter of the year check in on my goals to see if I was either on track or falling behind. Since seeing everyone post their mid-year check-ins, I thought it might once again be a good time to revisit my own goals to see if I am on track.

Top Five Book I Want to Read in 2017

At the start of the year I picked 5 books off of my TBR I wanted to get to this year the most. You can find the post here. I am happy to say I achieved this goal I have read every book I picked. You can find a review of most of those books in my #TBRTakeDown Wrap Up. Since I did so well with this I think I want to add another 5. So here are my new choices.

Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman

18302455

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas

 18302455

Eleanor Roosevelt, Vol 1, 1884-1933 by Blanche Wiesen Cook

Giving Up on Series/Books I Am Not Enjoying

Check! If feels so good to just let go of a book I am not enjoying.

Becoming a More Critical Review/Reader

This is more of a reflective goal than a goal you can actively seek such as page count or books read, but I felt it was important for me to become more critical. In the past where I have read if a book made me happy it was automatically 5 starts even if it was not my favorite. I have to say that this year I have become less of a passive reader and have taken time to reflect on my reading THEN rate/review the book.

Get to 0 by 2018

This goal is something I am having trouble with. At the start of the year I had 26 books on my TBR, which was great for me because it was well over 100 in the past. Currently, I have 34, but I have read 46 books so far this year. In theory I have read more than the books that were in my TBR, but I am not sure what happened. There are to many good book sales plus I went on vacation and picked up about 5-6 books. I think I am going to go on a Book Buying Ban or Read 5 to Get 1. I really crave the idea of walking into a bookstore of library and picking up a book and reading it then and there without adding it to a pile.

2017 Goals Update: First Quarter

The firstupdatetop5 quarter of 2017 is nearly over so I thought I would take this time to do a little update on my 2017 goals, you can find the post here: 2017 Goals! I also thought it would be fun to go through and show my progress of the books outlined in my post called Top 5 Books I Want to Read in 2017

On the right side of the post you will see an image of a few books. If you have not seen my previous post those are the top 5 books I wanted to read this year. There are also large green X’s on some of those books. Those are the books I have completed, 4 of the 5. I am actually very surprised at my progress, I did not expect to get threw them this quickly. If you are interested you can find short reviews for three of the completed books on my post entitled #TBRTakeDown: Wrap Up.

The first goal I had set forth for myself was to give up on series and books I am not enjoying. I have to say that so far I am keeping true to this goal. I have stopped reading two series I was not feeling and DNF’ed one book.

The second goal I set for myself was to become a more critical reading and rater. Once again I feel that I have held true to this, while I have really enjoyed a lot of the books I have read this year, so far 23, only one has been given 5 stars.

The third goal I set was getting my TBR to 0 by the end of the year. Now this one I am having a hard time with. I don’t think I am the only reader with this “problem”. Since January I have read 23 books, so in theory I should be very close to have 0 already. The thing is I am finding books online and in bookstores I want to read and I just can’t seem to help myself. I have managed to get my TBR to 33, up 7 books. If you are interested you can find my TBR on my Libib account.

The fourth goal I have set was to post on my blog at least twice a month. I have crushed this one by posting at least once a week so far this year. In some cases twice a week. Yay!

The final goal I have set myself was getting my goodreads shelves under control. A month or so ago I took time and sat down and created new shelves based upon genre. I have slowly been going through and moving my current reads and previous reads onto these shelves. So I can happily say I am on the right track.

Over all I have to say that 2017 is getting off to a great start. Now to get my TBR and book buying under control… yeah I am shaking my head as well, but I can dream!

Top 5 Books I Want to Read in 2017

top52017The Rising Song by Samantha Shannon

I have been looking forward to The Song Rising ever since I finished The Bone Season and The Mime Order. I read both of these during the #TBSReadalong on twitter with some amazing people which made the books even more fun. I received an ARC copy so I want to get it read before its March release date. Eh, I’m not kidding you guys, I just can’t wait any longer!

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

I started this book months ago and loved it, but I rented it from the library and it was in high demand so I ran out of time to read it. I finally have a copy of my own and couldn’t be more excited. It can get pretty dark from the 200 or so pages I have already read, but it continues to be a beautiful story. Fingers crossed it continues.

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

I picked this up at my local bookstore, it just caught my eye. It just seemed like a great mix of fiction and history to me. From the blurbs I read quickly in the bookstore it has promise.

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams by Stephen King

Last year I finally read some horror… I loved it. So when I saw this collection of short stories by Stephen King instantly picked it up and went to the register. I personally find his writing to be eerie, full of personality, and oddly refreshing. I say odd, because who would feel refreshed about horror other than me? Anyway none of his books have let me down yet so I don’t see how this one could.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

This book was another bookstore find. It just caught my eye. Once again this seemed like a great mixture of fiction and history. The little description got me before I even finished it. It seems like it will be an emotional read, which I can appreciate. If an author can take something historical and make someone emotionally invested, I say you my friend are a great author. I hope this book is up to my personal hype.

2017 Goals!

Reading Challenge

  1. Give up on series/books I am not enjoying.

This one I know will be a bit difficult for me. I know, I know, how could it be hard to give up something you aren’t enjoying? Well, when I am reading things like this I always think it is going to turn around. In general I am an optimistic person so I always have hope. But, this year I don’t want to waste my precious reading time on books that just aren’t for me.

  1. Be a more critical reader/rater.

I have recently been looking over my goodreads account and I noticed a pattern. I rate book VERY highly. Half of the ones I rated really highly I can’t really tell you what they were about anymore. I mean chances are I did really enjoy it, but I am changing my rating system.

1- I actively did not enjoy this book in anyway.

2-Eh, was not for me but I can see the appeal other see in the book.

3-This was a good book, look into it.

4-I really, really enjoyed this book.

5-This book WILL stay with me.

  1. Get to 0 by 2018.

In the past I have had a very high TBR count, at the height it was nearly 123. My current pile is sitting at a very manageable 26 books. I never thought I would get it under 30 books, but I did it! I really want to get to the point where I can go pick up a book from the store/online/on my ereader and read it right away.

  1. Post a blog post at least twice a month.

I just really want to not abandon this little project.

  1. Organize my goodreads shelves (cough add me :p).

I’m not 100% sure how I want to do this. I currently have set up a fiction and non-fiction shelves. I want to make them a bit more specific, but I’m not sure what genres I want to put there. Any idea please share!

December Reading Goal

This month I am dedicating my reading to finishing a few series I am nearly done with. Luckily for me that is only two series; The Raven Boys series and The Rosie Project duology (unless there are more coming out in the future I am unaware of). Between those two series I have only three books to read, which cross my fingers I can get through all of them between now and December 31st.

Books I have Left

Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion

From the books I have read in these series I am really excited to continue. I am very curious where Maggie Stiefvater is going to bring Blue and the gang next. They always seem to get themselves in the oddest types of situations, then you throw in the paranormal aspect and a true adventure begins. Additionally, I am very much looking forward to continue following along with Rosie and Don romance. I have high hopes for those too.

What book(s) will you be reading this month?
