Let's Talk

Let’s Talk | My Tarot Collection

Let's Talk

Hello everyone, over on twitter I few weeks ago I opened up to the fact I have used tarot cards for nearly a decade. When I first started using them, let’s just say people weren’t very kind about it. But, now nearly a decade later people are talking about them openly and it truly makes me happy to see. Now, I feel that everyone uses tarot cards differently so please understand this little look into my cards and how I use them is my personal relationship with my cards. That in no ways means you are using them wrong if you view or use them differently. I am not a tarot specialist or professional, so do your own research and have your own experiences. This post is for entertainment only and not advice. Now, on to my story of sorts.

Now, I personally do not believe that tarot cards tell the future. What I do believe is that they are a tool to better connect with my self conciseness, not a deity or entity. The symbolism in the cards and images tell a story, but just like books everyone can see and get something different based upon their life experiences and current life situation. One quote pops into my head,

“No two persons ever read the same book.”

Edmund Wilson

For me are a great tools for self reflection, self growth, and self awareness. Now historically these cards started off as a game, to being turned into what they are viewed as today. If you are interested in the history of the cards, here is link to a short article by How Tarot Cards Work by Lee Ann Obringer. Which, I find to be very interesting because these cards traveled from different parts of the world, were a game, and then turned into part of the occult. It is interesting that something so widly played with had its reputation changed to so many. Now,  when I use my cards I always light a white candle might it be protection, calming, or just me setting the intention that I am setting this time aside for me. Then it comes time to pick which deck I am going to be using. At this point I have 4 decks and an additional oracle deck.  I used to have two others, I recently gifted them to a friend, but I will still be sharing those with you as well.

My Decks Past and Present

Smith-Waite Tarot Borderless – Mass Produced, My most used deck.

This deck is one I use on a daily or almost daily basis. I do a daily pull for a card for me to reflect upon. This edition is just beautiful and really makes the art the focus, which for me in the most important part.

The Ostara Tarot – Mass Produced, gifted to a friend.

This is a beautiful deck with vivid colors and the creation of four artists. It is a wonderful work of collaboration. I ended up gifting it to a friend because I didn’t use it that often due to the thickness. I tend to favor thiner, sturdy paper.

Art Nouveau Tarot – Mass Produced, my first deck.

This was my first deck and I started with tarot nearly a decade ago. While I do not use this deck very often anymore, it has a place in my heart and I don’t think I could get rid of it. The art and pallet are just beautiful.

Madam Clara Tarot 3rd Edition – Indie, my second most used.

This brightly colored deck is my first indie deck I added to my collection. I happened to be on etsy and came across this deck that was originally on kick starter. I loved that it had key words on it, I think it is great for beginners who are learning, but also the art is just so unique and rich.

The 5-cent Tarot by Madam Clara – Indie, most recent addition.

Now, this one was a gift from a family member and it is just beautiful. I love the cooler tone and the carnival feel. I also like that this has key words, but gives you enough space to interpret your own meaning from the images.

Classic Rider-Waite Tarot – Mass Produced gifted to someone – Don’t have a picture.

Bonus Oracle Deck!

The Earthbound Oracle – Indie, only owned oracle deck and I LOVE it!

This was also a gift to me from my amazing boyfriend. He picked this up for me for Christmas and I have to say I was unsure of using an oracle deck with 0 booklet, but finding my own meanings and learning about animal symbolism.

DIY | Enamil Pin Display

DIY12:17So, I recently realized I have a ton of enamel pins, but they are all sitting in the bottom of a drawer or in a cup of some sort. I love pins and have since I was young. I started my collection when I was in 3rd grade…. so it has been a LONG time. I personally really enjoy collecting them because they are small and compact since I don’t have a ton of space. But, at this point I hide them away. I would prefer to display them and have the ability to look at them.

The main reason I would love to look at them is because I only buy them when I am visiting a new place or on a special occasion. I would love to be able to walk into my space and look at the happy memories. So, I went to google and typed in “Enamel Pin Display” and found the following inspiration.

This turns out to be from the Etsy shop PinnyslugDesign. So, if this DIY does not workout for me, I will be buying them. But, I am hoping it does work out because I can actually say I have everything I need think I need to make these myself! How often does that actually happen?

I am so happy with how these come out. I ended up leaving the ends raw until I fill them up until I am satisfied. When I have all the pins I want on them I am going to sew the edges in with some embroidery floss that I have laying around as well as put some glue around the edges so they don’t shift to much when I sew them.

I love how simple and cute these are and how I can easily add different sized hoops as my collection grows. I also don’t have to worry about finding the exact same frame or whatever. Raw hoops are always around and don’t really ever change.

How do you think I did recreating this DIY?

REVIEW | Women of Resistance by Danielle Barnhart and Iris Mahan

BookReview12:17

Women of Resistance: Poems for a New Feminism* I received this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Description

A collection with a feminist ethos that cuts across race, gender identity, and sexuality.

Creative activists have reacted to the 2016 Presidential election in myriad ways. Editors Danielle Barnhart and Iris Mahan have drawn on their profound knowledge of the poetry scene to put together an extraordinary list of poets taking a feminist stance against the new authority. What began as an informal collaboration of like-minded poets—to be released as a handbound chapbook—has grown into something far more substantial and ambitious: a fully fledged anthology of women’s resistance, with a portion of proceeds supporting Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Representing the complexity and diversity of contemporary womanhood and bolstering the fight against racism, sexism, and violence, this collection unites powerful new writers, performers, and activists with established poets. Contributors include Elizabeth Acevedo, Sandra Beasley, Jericho Brown, Mahogany L. Browne, Danielle Chapman, Tyehimba Jess, Kimberly Johnson, Jacqueline Jones LaMon, Maureen N. McLane, Joyce Peseroff, Mary Ruefle, Trish Salah, Patricia Smith, Anne Waldman, and Rachel Zucker. –goodreads.com

What I Liked

One of the main thing I like about this collection of poems is the fact that you can tell it is written by a wide array of women. You can tell they all have different life experiences and circumstances. For me, that is a sign of a well rounded collection. Due to this the poems are very different from one another, but they all share that single thread with one another. Feminism, strong women. This also led to there being so many different voices and I found myself really enjoying the scope of styles and stories that these individuals wrote.

Another thing I liked about this was the fact that this was a collection labeled as feminist and was truly feminist. It talked about equality of all. There were poems that dealt with race, violence, and of course gender issues. It was a nice seeing a collection and a book labeled as feminist saying “All. All. All!” instead of “Us. Us. Us!”

What I Didn’t Like

One thing I did not like, which is more me being unprepared than any fault of the book itself. Some of the poems were difficult, which I think they need to be to be true to themselves. But, this being unexpected made some of the reading difficult. But, as soon as I knew what some of the poems might be exploring I was fine. It was just the initial surprise. So just a warning, some of these poems explore very difficult situations.

Overall Thoughts

I would have to say I enjoyed this poetry collection. It explored the voices of an array of writings giving it a distinct feeling of authenticity. It also gives a voice to those who have gone through difficult experiences. It really makes you think outside of your own bubble and forces you to face it. If you enjoy feminist literature and poetry I would say you should pick this collection up. It was wonderful.

REVIEW | Herding Cats by Sarah Andersen

BookReview12:17

Herding Cats (Sarah's Scribbles, #3)

* I received this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Description

Sarah’s Scribbles,  Goodreads Choice Award for 2016:  Best Graphic Novels & Comics

“. . . author Sarah Andersen uses hilarious (and adorable) comics to illustrate the very specific growing pains that occur on your way to becoming a mature, put-together grownup. Andersen’s spot-on illustrations also show how to navigate this newfound adulthood once you arrive, since maturity is equally as hard to maintain as it is to find … “
The Huffington Post

Sarah valiantly struggles with waking up in the morning, being productive, and dealing with social situations. Sarah’s Scribbles is the comic strip that follows her life, finding humor in living as an adulting introvert that is at times weird, awkward, and embarrassing.

What I Liked

Sarah Andersen is one of the most funny human beings. Each comic I read in this book I laughed, smiles, and chuckled. This collection of comics lives up the hype of her previous two. Andersen has the ability to create simple comics that are highly relatable. By doing this she allows us to see the funny side of knowing we tell ourselves we are going to wake up and not hit snooze, but in truth we know we are going to hit to 1000 times. It also gives me and I would think others the comfort of knowing they are not alone in doing those types of thing.

One thing I really like about this collection is that each page is its separate comic. You can literally put it down on any page….if you end up putting it down. One thing that truly annoys me about some books is the lack of a natural stopping point while I am reading.

Lastly, I really enjoyed her style of drawing. It is simple, but has everything you need. It is adorable and creative. There is no fluff, apart for the kitties. Sometimes artists add to much and it can be distracting, Andersen has found a great balance.

At the end of the book the final sections are a message from the author that is geared for young artists. While I myself am not an artist her message is still relevant. Try, put yourself out there and keep at it.

What I Didn’t Like

Nothing, I loved everything. All bow down to Sarah Andersen! Eh hem… I mean go and get the book.

Overall Thoughts

If you couldn’t tell already, I loved this book. It is very relatable, humorous, and allows us to poke fun at ourselves. I have already texted and messaged a few of my friends they need to check out this collection. I know in the future if someone comes to me wanting a recommendation for something funny there is a very high chance that I will be recommending this. I ended up giving this 5 stars.

Hauls & Unboxings

Book Haul: May 2017

Book Haul.jpg

Even though I had a book haul already this month, for my birthday, I wanted to share the books I picked up for myself for the fun of it. If you have read any of these let me know what you thought!

The Circle by Dave Eggers

18302455

I mainly picked this book up because I have been hearing some great things and it has been made into a movie. Even though I know a lot of movie adaptations are not nearly as good I always enjoy seeing them. When you see a movie adaptation two things can happen. The first is that you get to see a book “come to life” before your eyes not just in your head. The second is you can see a different story that may be good on its own.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

22055262

This has been a book I have been intrigued by for a while, but for some reason I did not want to buy it myself. So when I won RAVEN AVERY milestone giveaway I finally picked it up and I am so happy I did. I am saving this for the summer when I have time to read a trilogy. P.S. thank you again Raven!

The Last Days of Magic: A Novel by Mark Tompkins

25734207

I love reading books about magic, so when I saw the title and read the description I had to have this book. It has a wonderful mixture of myths, magic, and mysticism. All things I  cannot ignore. So in my basket to checkout it went.

“What became of magic in the world? Who needed to do away with it, and for what reasons? Drawing on myth, legend, fairy tales, and Biblical mysteries, The Last Days of Magic brilliantly imagines answers to these questions, sweeping us back to a world where humans and magical beings co-exist as they had for centuries.”

– via goodreads.

Not Quite the Classics by Colin Mochrie

23330786

I picked this book up because I have been on a Whose Line is it Anyway? kick. If you are unsure of what I am referring to it is an improve comedy show that has been around since the 1990s. I grew up watching it and I have been watching a lot of the old episodes lately. So of course I wanted to read a book by one of these guys. I already read this book and write up a little review you can find here: Not Quite The Classics by Colin Mochrie. Over all I enjoyed it, I had a few good laughs and read it pretty quickly.

Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

25422234

I picked this book up for a few reasons. The first being it had to do with law, the second it talks about a strong woman, and lastly the name caught my attention then the description sealed the deal. I have read this already and enjoyed it. It had some cool graphics and images from all periods of her life. It told an amazing story of a strong woman breaking barriers and giving the future woman of the U.S. an opportunity to do great things.

One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter: Essays by Scaachi Koul

30658435

This book I did not really know that much about when I picked it from my BOTM (Book of the Month) dashboard. From what I have read on the little blurb it seems like it is going to be an interesting read and I am looking forward to reading it in the future.

Waking Gods: Book 2 of The Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel

30134847

I read the first book in this series last year, I think I also got it from BOTM. I loved the series and when I knew this was coming out I went to the bookstore on release day to get my hands on. Since this is the second book in a series I don’t really want to say much more.

What books have you picked up this past month?

Have you read any of these?

Not Quite The Classics by Colin Mochrie

Book Review.jpg
Not Quite The Classics by Colin Mochrie

23330786This little book is a collection of short stories by improve/comedian/actor Colin Mochrie. Every story in here is a little twist on classic literature. Some of the classics he “plays” with include Sherlock Holmes (my favorite), Shakespeare plays, A Tale of Two Cities, and many more.

Now, I can break this book into two sections, stories based off the classics I have read and then ones I have not read. The short stories that were based on classics I was familiar with were amazing! I was laughing and engrossed right away. It was like revisiting the book with a little quirk. He was able to peg the characters personalities, but also change them in an appropriate way that did his little retelling without taking anything away. You can tell he put in effort while writing this.

Now, for the short stories that were based upon classics I was unfamiliar with. They were well written and were funny as well. Even though I enjoyed them I feel like I did not get as much or missed some subtle jokes. So if you do pick up this book you can easily read these short stories and enjoy them, even laugh out loud. Don’t let the fact you did not read the original get in the way. I plan on eventually reading most of the ones used in this collection and plan on rereading this as I complete them.

Over all I would recommend this book for those who enjoy classic literature, retellings, and funny books. It is a wonderful short book to break up reading more serious, intense reads, but also longer books as well. I gave this a 3 out of 5 stars. It was great and I really think as I reread this I will update the score to go higher.
