Someone Picks My Books | Olivia’s Catastrophe | Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Hello and welcome to another installment of Someone Picks My Books! For November I was lucky enough to have Olivia from Olivia’s Catastrophe pick my book for me. She is very active over on her youtube channel, which is amazing, and twitter @oliviascatastro. I was so happy when she picked Clap When You Land, I heard nothing but amazing things and she even said she gave it 5 stars. I felt like this month was going to be a huge win.

One Sentence Review

A beautifully written exploration of the complexities of relationships and people, on top of that it explores the life of two half sisters that have no idea existed until they experience a life changing tragedy.

Description

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance – and Papi’s secrets – the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered. And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

Papi’s death uncovers all the painful truths he kept hidden, and the love he divided across an ocean. And now, Camino and Yahaira are both left to grapple with what this new sister means to them, and what it will now take to keep their dreams alive. -goodreads.com

What I Liked

Just a warning, this review is just going to be me gushing about a book I loved. This book is so beautifully written. I am actually surprised that I am saying this. Going into this book I had no idea that it was written in verse before I actually went to read it. I normally don’t do well with books written in this manner, but Acevedo really made it count in this book and not just a gimmick. The words were powerful, meaningful, and beautiful. You can see the authors care when it came to constructing each sentence and picking each word.

As for the two main characters, I really felt that the dual perspective worked wonderfully and we really were able to explore the lives of Camino and Yahaira. I really appreciated the fact that the author didn’t just tell us how different these half siblings lived, but showed us. I felt like while exploring the grief they had the author really opened up their worlds and made them dimensional. I really loved their personalities and I really enjoyed following them both. Normally when I read a dual or muliple perspective book there is one I am not too fond of, but in this book, I really enjoyed them both. I would not be sad to see another book with these two, I would love to see how they are doing. When I put down this book initially, I was thinking of all the possible situations they could be in now.

I also want to take a moment to appreciate that this author talked about a very difficult topic that in my opinion was very respectful, but also did not shy about from the difficult aspects as well.

What I Didn’t Like

Honestly, nothing. I really enjoyed reading this book and I am so happy that Olivia picked this one for me. I can see why she also gave it 5 stars.

Overall

Overall, I loved and adored this book so much. I have already recommended it to a few people in my life and will continue to do so. This book is a beautiful exploration of relationships, people, and family.

Next month I am reading a book picked by Erica who you can find on twitter as @2020hines_sight or on her youtube channel The Broken Spine. I am beyond thrilled to read her pick, I have been holding myself back from reading it too early for months!

Have you read this book before or is it on your TBR?

Let’s Talk | BuzzFeed Picks My Jane Austen Novel

Let's Talk

Hello and welcome to a hybrid of a post where I test BuzzFeeds ability to recommend a book and a mini book review. In May I was really in the mood for a classic and I had no idea what I wanted to read. I narrowed it down to Jane Austen and then had no idea what other book of hers to read, so I did what many of us do, I went to the internet for help. Here we go!

Like I said, I decided to go to the internet to see if I could be recommended a book to read of Jane Austen’s, because if I am being honest I didn’t really know about the plot of any of her novels outside of Pride and Prejudice. I ended up coming across this BuzzFeed Quiz called, “Which Jane Austen Book Do You Belong In?” So, I figured, why not give it a go? Here are my results.

As you can see, based upon my answers I belong in the novel Northanger Abbey. So, I ordered it from book depository and waited for it to arrive and then devoured it. Also, a bit of a side note, a lot of her novels are free from amazon as ebooks, as are a lot of classics. If you want a link to this book, you can find that here: Northanger Abbey (AmazonClassics Edition) , p.s. it’s not an affiliate link.

Description

“Catherine Morland is a young girl with a very active imagination. Her entry into the fashionable scene in Bath results in an invitation to stay with new friends at Northanger Abbey, but Catherine’s naivety and love of sensational novels lead to embarrassing and entertaining consequences”. –goodreads.com

My Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel. One thing that really stood out to me was the use of novels and story telling throughout this novel and how it impacted the main characters imagination.  I also liked the narrators/authors funny comments about novels as well and how people hide what they are reading if they are embarrassed.

I really liked when our main character Catherine was adventuring through Bath, I felt the character interactions were wonderful and it really set the stage for her actions. Catherine is such a kind person and I really loved her taste in books myself. The second half has a totally different feel to it, which I enjoyed, but was a bit jolting at first because it went from a light and airy bath to a gothic abbey, which I think was the entire point because this novel really just likes to poke fun and exaggerate what the imagination can do to someone.

This was a very good novel and I enjoyed reading it immensely. I decided to keep this novel in my collection so I can reread it again and annotate it. To be honest, I might even like this more than Pride and Prejudice.

What is your favorite novel by Jane Austen?

Did you read Northanger Abbey, what did you think about it?

The Books

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Huge

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I ended up liking this book so much more than I thought I would. I normally rarely read about celebrities or actors I like in real life, so I always thought, “Why would I care about one that didn’t even exist?”. Well, I have to say that this book proved that point wrong. Within the first chapter I was already hooked. They methods used by the author to tell Evelyn Hugo’s story were wonderful and made it feel so tangible. Not only did the author tell an addicting story of this woman, but she told a story of so much more than that. That is the part of the story I did not expect and loved. The author did some great things with this book and I highly recommend. Review first published here: Weeks in Review | November 4th-November 10th.

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things

So, I need to admit something here. I ended up DNFing this book. I read about 50 pages of it and while I enjoyed it very much while reading it. Once I put it down I just did not want to pick it up again. I cannot pin point the reason why, but I just didn’t feel the need to. Like I said, I enjoyed what I read, so I am even more confused. The writing was good, the story was interesting. I just think it was a case of the right book at the right time. I think I may try it again in the future, we shall see. I would suggest that you try it for yourself, I am a huge mood reader and in this case I think I was simply not in the mood.

DividerOverall, I am so happy with Jenna’s choices. I absolutely loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I was in shock at how much I liked it because I usually don’t enjoy books like this at all. While I DNF’ed the other book, I still think it is a good book, I just think I read it at the wrong time and I may give it another shot later on when I am more in the mood for something like that.

Anyway, thank-you for reading and thank-you so much Jenna for picking books to add to my TBR!

Books Amy Picked for Me

The first book I read was In the Days of Rain, a memoir of a family. I read through this book quickly, I was really interested in the story of this family and how they came to be prominent members of a cult through generations to then leaving and dealing with that. I also enjoyed the psychological implications that this book exposed me too through the authors own father. I felt it was interesting his feelings towards religion following the family leaving. I also loved how the author explored her own feelings and you can see her own feelings and how it affected her life in many ways, even in how she breaks up the novel.

4stars

The Second book I just finished buddy reading and I have to admit I read it a lot faster than I was meant to. I really enjoyed reading this magical realism novel. It was just the right about of magic and done in a ways that made it seem like it could happen in the real world. The main character and the supporting characters were well written and man was there one part where I got really mad, but the ending of the book made me feel a bit better about it. Additionally, the authors style was lovely as well. I highly recommend it if you are looking for something in the genre.

This month is a bit different then previous installments since I am currently doing my Read 5, Buy 1 Challenge, I am actually picking the books up from the library. If you want more information on this challenge I did a whole post you can see here: Lets Talk | My Read 5, Buy 1 Challenge.

Anyway, when I asked Reg to pick my books I gave her the same parameters I gave everyone else, pick 2 books, any books you want me to read at some point in the near future. Reg started thinking about all of the options she had. I have to admit, my side of the deal is pretty easy, I try the books people suggest to me. To be the one picking is a lot of pressure. I know for my I would hate it if someone did not like a book I picked for them, but this is all in the name of fun and I hope you didn’t feel too much pressure Reg!

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice” of Kinnakee, Kansas. She survived—and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, the Kill Club—a secret secret society obsessed with notorious crimes—locates Libby and pumps her for details. They hope to discover proof that may free Ben. Libby hopes to turn a profit off her tragic history: She’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club—for a fee. As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started—on the run from a killer.” -goodreads.com

Little Children by Tom Perrotta

“Tom Perrotta’s thirtyish parents of young children are a varied and surprising bunch. There’s Todd, the handsome stay-at-home dad dubbed “The Prom King” by the moms at the playground, and his wife, Kathy, a documentary filmmaker envious of the connection Todd has forged with their toddler son. And there’s Sarah, a lapsed feminist surprised to find she’s become a typical wife in a traditional marriage, and her husband, Richard, who is becoming more and more involved with an internet fantasy life than with his own wife and child. And then there’s Mary Ann, who has life all figured out, down to a scheduled roll in the hay with her husband every Tuesday at nine P.M. They all raise their kids in the kind of quiet suburb where nothing ever seems to happen – until one eventful summer, when a convicted child molester moves back to town, and two parents begin an affair that goes further than either of them could ever have imagined.”  -goodreads.com

First and foremost, I have no idea how I have never read a Gillian Flynn book. I love thrillers, you would have thought I would have read at least one book by her. I mean Flynns name comes up so frequently in the book sphere in general, but to be someone who loves thriller and have not read her, I really am not sure of how this happened. So I am so happy that Reg picked this book for me to read. I cannot wait to get it from the library and dive in.

The second book, Little Children I have never heard of before. I don’t know about you, but I get very excited when people recommend books I have never heard of before. I think because there is less of a hype and I don’t need to “fear” being let down after 24124902359 people post about how much they loved it. When I looked up this book, I was pretty much instantly intrigued. What affair? What happens with the new guy in town? How will this change affect the children? How will this change the social scape of this small town? I had so many questions instantly. If you couldn’t tell I was also very excited about this recommendation as well.

Hello everyone, today I am here with another ______ Picks My Books post. This month I am excited to say that another good friend of mine Jenna picked two books for me. She is absolutely wonderful, you all need to check her out ASAP. Now Jenna and I have been reading books together for the last few months. I think at this point it has been 5 or 6. With us discussing so many books together in detail I was very confident to pick her next to pick books to add to my TBR. Before getting further into this post I am going to link to all the previous posts in this series incase you have missed any of them.

DividerSo just like previous posts I gave Jenna minimal rules or guidelines to follow. I asked her to pick 2 books, any books she wanted. I did not limit her to specific genres or anything like that. It makes it more interesting.

So once I gave Jenna all the information she quickly got to work trying to figure out what books to have me buy and read. Well, I also had to wait for her letter to get to my house. Jenna did something so fun, she sent me a letter in the mail to tell me what books she picked for me. Now, if you don’t know me that well you may not know I LOVE getting letters in post cards and I am an avid user of postcrossing where you send postcards to people around the world and then others send you post cards from all corners of the planet. Anyway, I LOVED this idea, I just did not love the waiting. I was way too excited.

Eventually, I got the letter with my TBR and a lecture to finished the Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King. I will point out that I have now finished it!

So, the last few months I have had a series called “_______ Picks My Books”. This has been such a huge adventure for me. If you want to take a peak into my adventure you can read the posts in this series here: Haul | Boyfriend Picks My Books Haul | Bookseller Picks My Books and Haul | Book Buddy Picks My Books.

I have been sharing my hauls from this series with you, but I never really shared the aftermath of the hauls so I though it would be fun to share what has happened since the books have been added to my shelves. In this post I am only going to be focusing on the first two of the series since I have had time to get to them. I am about to pick up one of the books from Book Buddy Picks My Books, I swear Amy! Anyway, without more of a delay here we go!

Haul | Boyfriend Picks My Books Revisited

In this haul my boyfriend picked out three books for me. The First Pick By Gaslight by Steven Price, the second pick was Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba, and the last one was Hiddensee by Gregory Maguire.

18302455

Death Note: Black Edition, Vol. 1

Hiddensee: A Tale of the Once and Future Nutcracker

By Gaslight was featured in my post Let’s Talk | Try a Chapter April 2018. To focus on By Gaslight, I ended up unhauling this book. For me I was more into the idea of the book than the writing style. The writing style made it difficult for me to get into and I did not want to push through a 700 page book to see if I would like the story. The main issue I had was that it was difficult to tell if the person was having internal or external dialogue.

Hiddensee had much the same issue for me. I really like the idea of the book, but the writing style was not for me. I may in the future try the audiobook version, but who knows what will happen.

The last book my boyfriend picked for me was Deathnote… I LOVED THIS! I am still in the process of reading this series, but I am loving it I am currently on Volume 4. This was a total win for  him. Overall, while I did not like a majority of this haul I count it as a success because I found a series I really like.

Haul | Bookseller Picks My Books  Revisited

In this haul the bookseller picked Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon and The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. This experiment was a bit harder for me since I was asking a stranger who has no idea who I was and what my reading tastes were. So I was anxious as to how this would unfold.

The Pillars of the Earth

Everything, Everything

The first book that she picked recommended to me was The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Now, if you follow me on goodreads you will see I am currently about 200 pages into this book. I have to admit this book is HUGE, but I am really liking it. The writing style is perfect and I love how there are so many intertwined stories. I even picked up the second book in the series because I knew I would want to continue. This was a total win.

The second book was a YA book I have been hearing about for years, but I never picked up for one reason or another. Everything, Everything was featured in my post WRAP UP | March 2018. Overall, I really liked it. While I can understand why some people have problems with it, I wont say more because…spoilers! But, I read it quickly, a single day in fact. So this was another win for this awesome bookseller.

DividerThis series has been so much fun and I am looking forward to doing more of then. I have gotten out of my book comfort zone and I have found some real gems. I also want to thank-you guys for enjoying them too. Anyway, let me know what you thought about this little revisit.
